The Literacy Collaborative framework for literacy lessons consists of a number of elements that provide many opportunities for reading and writing. These opportunities include reading and writing across the curriculum. Teachers provide direct, research based instruction to guide students in acquiring strategies for maintaining fluency, text comprehension, and vocabulary development. Phonemic awareness and phonics instruction are provided as students engage in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Instruction moves from demonstration and explicit teaching to guided practice and then to independent problem solving.
